IBM to produce super ‘brainy’ computers

Just when you thought computers were intelligent enough, it would seem that IBM have been working with the US government to create electronic circuits which will mimic the brain.

It is developing an area called ‘cognitive computing’, and according to the BBC this will mean that neurobiologists, computer and materials scientists and psychologists will all be working together to test out this new form of ‘brainy’ computers.

IBM scientist Dharmendra Modha told the guys from BBC, “The key idea of cognitive computing is to engineer mind-like intelligent machines by reverse engineering the structure, dynamics, function and behaviour of the brain.”

As the team work together they hope that in the long term they will create a cognitive computing system which will have the level complexity of a cat’s brain. The only thing I am wondering now is how long it will take for them to develop the same system for a human brain? Scary but interesting stuff!
