LG Display Co who Provide the screens for Apple’s iPad tablet and Amazon’s Kindle e-reader have announced that it is set to develop a range of flexible, colour ‘e-papers’ ready to install in future e-readers and tablets. Production is set to commence before the end of the year.

The start of the “mass-production of 19-inch flexible e-papers and 9.7-inch colour e-papers” is the result of years of research and development in electronic paper technology.

LG’s latest technology could add up to 16.7 million colours to the current breed of monochrome screens used in many popular e-reader devices.

The main problem faced by the company is the cost and usage issues that have previously troubled the introduction of flexible and colour e-papers.

These develops could lead to exciting possibilities for the future of e-reader devices and could result in newspaper style publications on a single sheet of e-paper.

But the difficulties in producing flexible e-papers caused Plastic Logic to cancel plans to release the Que e-reader this month so LG are entering difficult territory, but if they pull it off we could see the birth of electronic newspapers.

But with online news sites readily available through RRS Feeds, mobile browsers and apps, is there  a market for an Enewspaper?
