Until recently Apple forbade the development of turn-by-turn apps for the iPhone. But at the WWDC Apple demonstrated the new iPhone 3.0 OS along with a new navigation app by TomTom. The iPhone 3.0 OS no longer has the restriction on the development of GPS navigation software.

While many are waiting for the TomTom application to be released, European software developers NAVIGON have beaten TomTom by releasing a navigation app for Europe.

The app works on any iPhone with the new 3.0 OS. The software is available from the App Store with an introductory price of $94.99 (roughly £58) with the price going up after the end of this month (June 09).

The app includes maps for the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as the rest of mainland Europe including France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. Eastern Europe is also covered including Poland, Hungary and Romania. The app supports ten different languages and will automatically switch based on the selected language for the iPhone itself. The download is quite large at 1.65 GB.
