Ok, so it’s not really called Robochef. It’s actually the much less memorable M-430iA hand type H. (Why H? Did they test A through G first?)

From Japanese food machinery maker Baba Tekkosho Co comes another glimpse into the future with their creation of this new bionic arm. It’s well established on this site that I love robots and am not great at cooking, so here’s my perfect kitchen gadget- someone to make my dinner for me! It was unveiled on Tuesday at The International Food Machinery and Technology Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan, when the makers demonstrated its ability to handle fragile items and move them from place to place without harm. It’s been touted for pharmaceutical companies (I assume as a way to count out the meds) as well as the catering industry- as you can see from the photo its apparently good at serving sushi.

And ok so a robotic arm in itself probably isn’t anything new. I can hear you know asking me why you should care when robotic arms have been painting cars and drilling in screws for ages now (well according to the adverts anyway!). Well, the key here seems to be that it works with fragile items without breaking them. I can barely do that and I’m a grown adult with full cognitive abilities (apparently). It just shows that robots are becoming more and more advanced. Today, serving sushi, tomorrow? Performing simple operations? Creating new works of art?

I should probably point out that thats purely my speculation (the press release for this robot was keen to point out that it doesn’t preparethe sushi, only picks it up) but as robots begin to be manufactured successfully for more and more delicate tasks, the next step seems to logically be increased dexterity and fluidity of movement. So who’s to say I’m wrong when I predict a robotic surgeon at some point in the future?
